php - show a specific number of letters from the database -

i have problem php/mysql me fix plz iam using code show number of letters field in database

$news_whole= $row_news['smalltext'];   echo substr($news_whole,0,600);  

but result ..at end there square ..i don't know it. how can remove it!!!?

you're using multi-byte character set , should use mb_substr() or mysql's own substring() function in sql query.
